365 days later

May 19, 2017

7:35 am - the phone rings.

"Damn that M, calling so early," but it's not M.

A pleasant female voice asks for me and informs me that the Orthopedic Clinic has a cancellation. Would I be able to make it in for 8:30? Would I? I was in their waiting room before 8:15.

I fell a year ago tomorrow and have been waiting 365 days for an orthopaedic consult. My projected appointment date was November 2017 so I was pretty stoked to get in 6 months before then. Welcome to the Canadian health system! It may be free but it sure isn't fast.

I consulted with a lovely surgeon and med student, got re-x-rayed twice, glowed in the dark a little.... Turns out E, my physiotherapist, was right again and surgery can't help with with my ankle. It is apparently experiencing something akin to PTSD. The mechanical bits have healed but my nervous system still thinks something bad is happening and sends out panicked pain impulses to my brain. My left leg and ankle have also become very weak and need "active" (translation: torturous) physiotherapy to get me walking again.

The good news is that I am no longer waiting for surgery or someone else to do something for me. It's all up to me, E and what my ankle can tolerate.

Hello Miss S:

I really am glad to hear that you don't need surgery on your ankle yahoo *L* and doing things for yourself is much better than wait for someone else to do for you, as for therapy come on girl you can handle it just grab a bottle of tequila or something after your physic *LOL* I might even join you. Glad to hear from you, take care of yourself.

Hugs

Mai
